The 12th Prime Minister of Uganda
Will Mao become the 12 Prime Minister or Lumumba?
By Osman Draga Today Africanews Opinion:
The macabre tales of corruption involving Ministers is swirling and President Yoweri Museveni who made it public in Arua during his investment tour in West Nile region that perpetrators of corruption will be crashed seems to be possibly thinking of relieving some Ministers of their duties including the Prime Minister and appoint new comers or pick within old cadres.
Uganda has 32 Cabinet ministers and 50 State Ministers but about 22 of the ministers will go down memory lane as they have cemented themselves in the sands making bad records with some already in legal battles with Anti Corruption court over Karamoja ironsheets saga.
Now the big question that is making day and night political debate is who will be appointed as the next Prime Minister of Uganda and from which region who can fear God and hate dishonest gains from the office of the Prime Minister?.
But the decision is still wide open though some critics might want to strike a regional balance in the appointment of the Prime Minister that can portray national character of the National
Resistance Movement (NRM), than the position oscilliating in one area or appointing more one region in strategic positions than other regions.
Anyway the principle of rotating Prime Minister is not enshrined in the constitution of Uganda which is why West Nile region and Muslims have not got that position of Prime Minister since independence and the chronological aged president with his intellectual mind who strictly makes his appointments based on merit and not on ethnic, must also be thinking of short listing the next Prime Minister this time.on regional or religion balance and besides a person with high profile who will make much impact on the political landscape for 2026 presidential election which could either see him appointing Norbert Mao the current Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs or Justine Kasule Lumumba who is the Minister in charge of General Duties.
As history is who we are and why we are, I have decided to provide a chronological list of the Prime Ministers of Uganda since independence in respect to my definition of history.
The first Prime Minister of Uganda after Uganda attained its Independence from British rule in 1962 was Dr. Milton Obote, and Otema Allimadi became the Prime Minister after the post was re-established in 1980 and served for five years until 1985.
Late Paulo Muwanga who was the electoral commission and the de facto President became the 3rd Prime Minister before Abraham Waligo replaced him as the 4th Prime Minister in the same year.
Now new chapter began in 1986 when President Yoweri Museveni came to power, his first Prime Minister was late Dr. Samson Kisekka and was the 5th Prime Minister before he was elevated to Vice President where George Cosmas Adyebo succeeded him in 1991 to 1994 as the 6th Prime Minister.
The chronology continued further, in 1994, Kintu Musoke was appointed as Prime Minister which he served till 1999 and he was the 7th Prime Minister.
On April 5, 1999 Apolo Nsibambi took over as the 8th Prime Minister and served till 2011, when Amama Mbabazi succeeded him as the 9th Prime Minister.
Amama Mbabazi was sacked and replaced by Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda in 2014 and he became the 10th Prime Minister which he served until 2021 before the current Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja who is now the 11th Prime Minister and the only female was appointed as Prime Minister since independence.
Now who will be appointed as the 12th Prime Minister of Uganda?
