SOMALI UNION CONDEMNS GOV'T FOR VIOLATING WORKERS' RIGHTS
THURSDAY, JANUARY 18, 2024: The Somali Communication Workers Union (SOCOWU) has strongly condemned Mogadishu - based government for mistreatment of its members working at Hormuud Telecom Somalia. The Union said its concerned about continued harassment by the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) in the capital, Mogadishu.
SOCOWU Chairman Eng Mohamed Abdullahi, demanded for an immediate end to any unfair treatment and harassment directed at its members.
In a strong worded Press Statement dated January 16, 2024, SOCOWU demanded from NISA leaders and government officials to unconditionally release all detained workers being held incommunicado.
The Union calls for adherence to justice, and noted need for workers' rights to be respected and for an environment where citizens can contribute to national development without fear or favour.
SOCOWU calls on federal government leaders, including the President and the Prime Minister, to intervene in the matter and release all the workers.
" We appeal to government to take decisive action against those responsible for harassment and detention of Workers at Hormuud Mogadishu", he said.
Eng. Abdullahi said they are dedicated to ensuring communication workers' rights in Somalia are safeguarded.
SOCOWU is optimistic that its plea for justice will be heard, and swift action will be taken to release Workers and ensure Labour rights are respected in the country.
The Union remains committed to championing communication workers' rights and anticipates a prompt action to resolve the unfortunate situation.
